Skeleton of foot bones - podotherapy treats foot complaints

What is podotherapy actually?

Podotherapy focuses on examining and treating complaints in the lower extremities. Think of foot complaints, but also complaints in knees, hips or the lower back. Do you experience pain? The podotherapist investigates the cause of your pain and then looks for the most suitable solution. This can be a custom-made insole, but also shoe advice, exercises, an orthosis, nail brace or a temporary treatment such as taping or applying felt. In short, for almost all complaints that are foot or foot position related, the podotherapist looks for a suitable solution.

Podotherapy is for everyone

In every age category you can encounter different complaints. This can be related to development in children and changes in your body as you get older. So everyone can come to VoorVoet Podotherapie Enschede.

Podotherapy for children

Podotherapy can help improve the mobility and functioning of children's feet, which contributes to their overall health and well-being. It is important to start podotherapy in time if your child has foot problems, so that any conditions can be treated and prevented from worsening.

Children can benefit from podotherapy if they:

  • Have problems with walking, running or jumping
  • Experience pain or discomfort in the feet, legs, knees or back
  • Tire quickly during play
  • Have abnormalities of the legs or feet, such as knock knees or bow legs
  • Wear out shoes quickly and excessively

Podotherapy for athletes and active people

VoorVoet Podotherapie Enschede can provide a solution for athletes. Athletes can suffer from foot problems as a result of the many hours they spend hiking, running, jumping, running and other physical activities. Common foot complaints among active people include:

  • Overload of the feet, causing inflammations, pressure problems, blisters or wounds.
  • Sprains or strains of the feet.
  • Stress fractures, caused by repeatedly loading the feet.
  • Reduced mobility of the ankles and feet, which can affect performance.

Podotherapy can help athletes and active people prevent and treat foot problems by improving mobility, adjusting shoes where necessary and/or providing exercises. Podotherapists can also advise and manufacture specific insoles or other aids that can improve performance and reduce the risk of injuries. Through proper care and advice, the podotherapist can ensure that you can stay fit and active.

Podotherapy for the elderly

As an elderly person, you can also come to VoorVoet Podotherapie Enschede. As you get older, changes can occur in the feet, including:

  • Thinning tissue, making the feet more sensitive.
  • Loss of elastic resilience, making it harder for the feet to respond to load
  • Osteoporosis, which contributes to the risk of fractures in the feet
  • Diabetes, rheumatism, arthritis and other (chronic) conditions that can affect the functioning of the feet and make foot care more difficult. This poses an additional risk for the development of foot problems.

Podotherapy can help optimize the pressure and support under the feet so that fewer pain complaints occur. This allows you to move more comfortably and safely, which reduces the risk of falling. It is important to seek help for foot problems in time, so that any conditions and pain complaints are treated in time and quality of life is improved.

The treatment process

We always start with a comprehensive intake to map out the complaints. Based on that, we conduct an examination. This usually consists of an inspection, examination of the gait pattern, a pressure measurement and testing the function of the feet. We also look at the footwear you walk in a lot or in which you experience many complaints. If a therapy is indicated, we discuss this together and with approval the therapy is started. In the case of fitting podotherapeutic insoles, the insoles are delivered in the short term and if you are new to us, a follow-up appointment always takes place. The therapy is always customized and tailored to the individual situation.

Company podotherapy is a specific form of podotherapy aimed at improving the health and well-being of employees. It focuses on preventing and treating foot complaints that arise from the work environment, such as wearing poorly fitting work shoes, prolonged standing on hard surfaces and repetitive tasks. Company podotherapy can be offered as part of a corporate health program and includes:

  • Assessment of the work environment and work process
  • Advice on wearing suitable shoes and, if necessary, fitting insoles that are suitable for work shoes. Specific laws and regulations apply to this.
  • Treatment of foot complaints
  • Exercises for the feet and improving posture

What is a risk foot?

A risk foot means that there are a number of factors present that increase the risk of developing wounds, and also all possible complications such as poor healing or even amputation. The risk factors for the development of these problems include sensory disturbances (neuropathy), reduced blood flow (angiopathy), reduced mobility and/or an abnormal foot position. This can lead to excessive pressure and friction, which can cause calluses, corns, blisters or wounds.

With reduced feeling in the feet, this is noticed less quickly or not at all. With poor blood flow, the wound will also heal poorly or not at all. A combination of these factors can lead to major problems and in extreme cases amputation. We naturally want to prevent that as much as possible.

There are many different causes for the development of neuropathy. This can be, for example, a neurological condition, or as a result of diabetes or rheumatism. It can also be a side effect of chemotherapy. These are just a few examples.

If your primary care provider or practice assistant has referred you to VoorVoet Podotherapie Enschede due to a risk foot, the podotherapist will examine your feet for these risk factors. The risk factors will be mapped and if there is an increased risk, a personal treatment plan will be drawn up. This differs per person and can consist of foot care advice, shoe advice, fitting pressure-distributing insoles, manufacturing an orthosis or a combination of the above.

For foot treatments, close cooperation will be made with the medical pedicurist who will perform medically necessary foot care. We also work together with the practice assistant, general practitioner or specialist where necessary to keep your feet in the best possible condition.

From a certain risk classification you may be eligible for reimbursement from basic insurance. You need a referral from your primary care provider for this.

What risk classifications are there?

The risk classifications are called care profiles. Depending on the care profile, treatments are or are not reimbursed from basic insurance.

No increased risk

There is no neuropathy or reduced blood flow - there is no increased risk - no reimbursement from basic insurance is possible. Your feet are - in that respect - in good condition!

Care profile 1

There is only neuropathy or reduced blood flow, but there are no pressure points - there is reimbursement for an annual foot examination at the podotherapist, but no reimbursement for treatments from basic insurance.

Care profile 2

There is neuropathy and reduced blood flow but there are no pressure points - there is reimbursement for treatments from basic insurance.

Care profile 3

There is neuropathy and/or reduced blood flow and pressure points are present - there is reimbursement for treatments from basic insurance.

Care profile 4

There is a wound in the past, an amputation or kidney function replacement therapy - there is reimbursement for treatments from basic insurance.

Reimbursement aids

Do you need podotherapeutic aids* to ensure that the foot position, foot function or pressure distribution under your feet improves? These are not covered by basic insurance. You may receive reimbursement from your supplementary insurance. Look for possible reimbursements of podotherapeutic aids in the policy of your supplementary insurance.

(*) Podotherapeutic insoles, orthoses or nail braces are podotherapeutic aids used by VoorVoet Podotherapie Enschede.
